The Underground Railroad book tells the story of Willie Ray Smith S., a legendary Texas high school coach during segregation and father of College Football Hall of Famer Bubba Smith, as the chief engineer. Readers will follow the path of Michigan State football players escaping segregation as Willie Ray Sr. winds his way through the South pick up players and delivering to his good friend, Michigan State College Football Hall of Fame coach Duffy Daugherty.
Children reading the book will hear the true story of college football integration. As I write in “RAYE of LIGHT, Jimmy Raye, Duffy Daugherty, College Football Integration and the 1965-66 Michigan State Spartans” and in THE RIGHT THING TO DO, The True Pioneers of College Football Integration in the 1960s,” Duffy didn’t recruit the segregated South, the southern Black high school coaches and others opposed to segregation recruited Duffy.
They viewed Michigan State as a place of opportunity based on watching the team and its Midwest-based Black stars lead wins in the 1954 and 1956 Rose Bowls.
