Thanks to “The Drive with Jack” for having me on his show during Michigan State’s homecoming weekend for more discussion on the Spartans leading college football integration with Duffy Daugherty’s 1960s teams. This appearance was about how Alabama coach Bear Bryant may have ducked an offer from athletic director Biggie Munn to play Duffy’s Spartans.
Don’t believe the Bear Bryant mythology around the 1970 USC-Alabama game. It’s a 30-year hoax? Why only 30 years since the game was played in 1970? The myths and outright fiction weren’t made up and spread until the 1990s. In 1980, Time magazine wrote a 5,100-word reflective piece on Bryant’s career. There wasn’t a single word about the 1970 USC-Alabama game. The myth hadn’t been spread.
