Listen to Duffy’s History Champions — athletes who comment on college football integration history. Michigan State coach Duffy Daugherty’s influence extends from his 1950s and 1960s teams to his former assistant coaches and players who followed his blueprint upon becoming a head coach at schools from coast to coast. The untold stories are told in my books and my website, TomShanahan.Report, and throughout a documentary project, Game Changers of the Century documentary development – Tom Shanahan Report

EPISODE VIII, Aiden Smalls, North Carolina State football

NC State’s Aiden Smalls provides a history lesson on Wolfpack coach Earle Edwards. The school’s Hall of Fame coach desegregated the program with its first four Black players — Marcus Martin, Clyde Chesney, Willie Burden and Charley Young.

Edwards came to NC State from Michigan State, where he coached with Duffy Daugherty.

Smalls, a versatile athlete recruited as a wide receiver, graduated early to enroll in January with a head start on his career. Last fall as Clayton High’s quarterback, he led his school a state runner-up finish in the NCHSAA 8A playoffs.

His new book on Michigan State leading college football integration is, “THE RIGHT THING TO DO, The True Pioneers of College Football Integration in the 1960s.” His first book was “RAYE OF LIGHT, Jimmy Raye, Duffy Daugherty, the Integration of College Football and the 1965-66 Michigan State Spartans.”

My books tell the true story of college football integration in the 1960s and address the myths and fiction that allowed a false narrative surrounding the 1970 USC-Alabama game to usurp the credit from the true pioneers. As I said when I spoke at the National Sports Media Association book festival, no two books provide an accurate portrayal more than RAYE OF LIGHT and THE RIGHT THING TO DO.

I’ll put my facts up against anybody, anytime, anywhere. Watch here.
